Coal gasification for power generation: A Green Path to Convert "black gold"
Preface
Under the guidance of the "dual carbon" strategy, coal gasification power generation is becoming an important direction for the clean utilization of coal. Through advanced gasification technology, coal is converted into clean combustible gas and drives gas generator sets to achieve efficient power generation. This not only improves energy utilization efficiency but also significantly reduces pollution emissions.
I. What is coal gasification power generation?
(1)Coal gasification power generation refers to the process where coal reacts with air/oxygen and water vapor in a gasifier to produce combustible gas (syngas), which is then purified and fed into a gas-fired power generation unit for power generation.
(2) The main components of this gas are:
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Hydrogen (H2)
A small amount of methane (CH₄) and nitrogen (N₂)
Calorific value: approximately 4 to 6 MJ/Nm³, it belongs to medium and low calorific value gas.
One cubic meter of gasification gas can approximately produce:
0.45 to 0.5 kW.h of electricity (kilowatt-hours /kW.h)
Ⅱ. Process Flow Chart

Iii. List of Coal Types Suitable for Gasification
Iv. Technological Advantages
High efficiency: It is 5 to 10% more efficient than traditional coal-fired power and is more suitable for distributed power generation
Low pollution: The gas burns completely, and the emissions of SO₂, NOx and dust are significantly reduced
Synergistic heating: It has the conditions for cogeneration of heat and power, achieving stepwise utilization of energy
Strong adaptability: It can be adapted to various low-rank coal, lignite, coal slime and other raw materials
Flexible deployment: Suitable for the deployment of small and medium-sized power stations in parks, mining areas, factory zones and other places
V. Market Prospect Analysis
With the intensification of environmental protection policies and the increasing demand for distributed energy in industrial parks, coal gasification power generation is expected to expand rapidly in the following scenarios:
Power generation through the recovery of by-product gas from coal chemical industry
Construction of independent power stations in mining areas and coal-based industrial parks
Local "coal-to-electricity" supporting solutions
The utilization of low-rank coal resources overseas for power generation
