"From Black Mud to Green Electricity: A Comprehensive Analysis of the Entire Process of Oil Sludge Pyrolysis Power Generation"
What is oil sludge?
Oil sludge is an oily waste produced during the processes of oil extraction, transportation and refining. It has high viscosity and high pollution. Traditional treatment methods such as incineration or landfill not only have high costs but also are prone to causing secondary pollution.
1、Common classifications of oil sludge
01 Classified by source
Type | Main source | Characteristics |
Oil sludge is produced in the oil field (Drilling mud) | Crude oil extraction and drilling operations | High oil content, high water content and relatively high sand content |
Oil sludge from gathering and transportation stations | Sediments in the process of crude oil gathering and transportation | The oil and water emulsify and have poor fluidity |
Sediment at the bottom of the storage tank | The cleaning process of the oil storage tank | The oil quality has aged, and there are many resins and asphaltenes |
Refinery sludge | Sediment in the refining and chemical process | The composition is complex, containing heavy metals and additives |
Oily wastewater treatment sludge | The residual sludge of the oily wastewater treatment system | It has a high moisture content and a relatively low oil content, but the total amount is large |
02 Classification by physical properties
Type | Characteristics |
Liquid oil sludge | The moisture content is over 70%, and it is in a fluid state |
Semi-solid oil sludge | The moisture content is 40% to 70%, and it has a certain fluidity |
Solid oil sludge | The moisture content is less than 40%, the texture is relatively thick, and it is in a paste or block form |
2. Reference calorific value for the pyrolysis of oil sludge
Oil sludge produced from oil fields: 3600-6000 kcal/kg
Sediment at the bottom of the storage tank: 4300-6700 kcal/kg
Refinery sludge: 2400-4800 kcal/kg
Sludge from oily wastewater treatment: 1200-2900 kcal/kg
3. More suitable types of oil sludge for gas-fired power generation
Preferred type: High oil content, high calorific value, and easily vaporized oil sludge
Type of oil sludge | Recommendation level | Reason |
Oil sludge is produced in the oil field (Drilling mud) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | High oil content, high calorific value, sustainable gas supply, suitable for thermal cracking gas production |
Sediment at the bottom of the storage tank | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | It has good gas production performance and is suitable for small and medium-sized distributed projects |
Oily wastewater treatment sludge | ⭐ | It has a low calorific value and is not suitable for direct power generation |
Comprehensive sludge of the refinery | ⭐⭐ | The composition is complex and highly corrosive, requiring special pretreatment |
4. Comprehensive analysis of the technical process
(1) Sludge pretreatment: drying/pyrolysis/anaerobic treatment, releasing gas
(2) Gas purification: Remove moisture, sulfides and particles to ensure gas quality
(3) Gas generator set power generation: It is efficiently converted into electrical energy and can be used for self-consumption or connected to the grid
(4) Waste heat recovery: Provide hot water/steam to enhance the overall efficiency of the system
5. Advantages of our equipment
(1) Compatible with various gases: oil sludge pyrolysis gas, tire cracking gas, associated gas, biogas, etc
(2) High power generation efficiency (Note: 1 cubic meter of tire pyrolysis gas can generate 3.8 kilowatt-hours of electricity)
(3) Wide range of single-unit power: 300kW to 4000kW
(4) Modular container design for easy installation
(5) Remote monitoring system, convenient for maintenance
