To fully grasp the principles and merits of coalbed methane power generation, we first need to understand the fundamental properties of coalbed methane.
Coalbed Methane (CBM), commonly known as coal mine gas, is an unconventional natural gas hosted in coal seams with methane as its primary component, classified as an associated mineral resource of coal.
· Core component: Methane (CH₄) accounts for 90% to 99% of the gas, with trace impurities including carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

1. Gas Internal Combustion Engine Power Generation
This is the most widely deployed technology for domestic CBM power stations.
Working Principle:
CBM mixes with air at a calibrated ratio before entering cylinders for combustion. The combustion drives reciprocating piston motion, and a crankshaft converts mechanical energy to rotate generators and produce electricity.
Core Advantages:
Strong fuel adaptability: Stable power generation is achievable with methane concentrations as low as 6%.
Flexible start-stop performance and fast load response, ideal for coal mines with fluctuating gas supply.
Wide single-unit power range (hundreds of kilowatts to several megawatts), supporting modular assembly.
Short construction cycle: Facilities can be put into operation within 5 to 6 months.
2. Gas Turbine Power Generation
Working Principle:
Compressed air and CBM are mixed and combusted in a combustion chamber. The resulting high-temperature, high-pressure gas directly spins turbines to drive generators.
Features:
High single-unit power output and stable operation, yet stringent requirements for gas concentration and pressure. It is better suited for surface extraction projects with high methane concentration and large gas volume.
3. Combined Heat and Power (CHP) / Combined Cycle Power Generation
Based on gas internal combustion engines or gas turbines, a waste heat recovery system is added to supply heat for mine area heating, wellhead thermal insulation and industrial steam. The comprehensive energy efficiency can exceed 80%, greatly improving project economic returns.
Economic gains are only one merit of CBM power stations; they deliver far-reaching benefits in safety, environmental protection and policy compliance, making them a strategic investment for coal mining enterprises.

Utilizing 100 million cubic meters of CBM delivers an equivalent carbon dioxide emission reduction of roughly 1.5 million tons.
Replacing coal-fired power generation significantly curtails emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.
3. Economic Value: Monetize Waste Gas for Multiple Revenue Streams
Cost reduction benefits: Pure CBM generates about 4 kWh per cubic meter. The produced electricity meets mine power demands for ventilation, water drainage and hoisting, cutting external power purchase expenses. Recovered waste heat supplies mine heating and wellhead insulation, eliminating operating costs for coal-fired boilers.
Power sales revenue: Surplus electricity can be fed into the grid for steady power sales income.
Government subsidies: Operators qualify for central and local subsidies for CBM development and utilization, preferential grid feed-in tariffs. Additionally, methane emission control projects are eligible for CCER carbon credit trading proceeds.
China has rolled out a suite of supportive policies for CBM power generation projects:
· Coal mine gas power generation prioritizes self-consumption, with the power grid purchasing all surplus electricity.
· Multiple incentive policies apply, including VAT refund upon collection and special central fiscal subsidies.
